David Toms and Chez Reavie in first round lead at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
David Toms and Chez Reavie smashed a score of 8-under-par, 62 in the first round of the $6.2 million-Crowne Plaza Invitational, which is taking place at the par-70 Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The Professional Golf
Association Tour event is carrying a purse of $6.2 million and 500 FedEx points apart from the glorious trophy.
Toms teed-off from the back and reeled eight birdies without a loss. He started the birdie fiesta from the par-4 12th, when he fired the tee shot into the rough in front of a tree. Unaffected by the sudden challenge,
the 44-year-old laid his hands on the wedge and smashed a shot in direction of the green, hitting it in regulation. The fast recovery earned him a birdie and a momentum to carry until the last hole of the round.
The 12-time winner on the PGA tour repeated a similar action in the next holes and relished success in carding three more birdies. The best shot on the back was reckoned at the 18th hole, when Toms hit the second shot
into the trees on the left of the green. The Louisianan once again depended on the wedges and hit a 25 feet long birdie to seal the first half in lead.
On his way to the front, the player who lost the playoff against K.J Choi in the Players Championship, birdied two opening holes to set things into momentum. The initial success stocked the player with loads of confidence, which
eventually helped him in netting two more birdies towards the end.
Reward comes with risk and so it happened on the seventh and ninth hole, where Toms produced the finest iron-play. Toms hit a 7-iron on the tee of the seventh hole that led him to the rough and from there; he used a pitching wedge
to birdie the pin, which was placed at an extremely difficult spot.
Despite finishing the day in lead, the player was not satisfied with his game. He said, “I didn't drive the ball that well today. One thing that you can look at is, you could play conservative golf, and you can hit irons or hybrids
off the tee, you get the ball in the fairway pretty easily, because if you lay back, they don't pinch in.”
