David Toms leads Player Championship after Round 2 with a 68
David Toms smashed a score of 10-under par in second round of the $9.5-million Player Championship to surge into a convincing lead. The 37th edition of Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event is taking place at
the par-72 Tournament Player Club, Sawgrass.
Toms teed-off from the front and reeled six birdies against two bogeys. The 44-year-old American started slow, as he par-equalled the first four holes. However, on par-4, fifth, the Louisiana native drove a tee shot across the
fairway and directed the second shot towards the green with the help of a 7-iron. Toms walked towards the green and putted for a birdie. The debut accomplishment of the day set the player in the momentum, which ultimately resulted in him catching two more
on the front.
12-time winner on the PGA Tour, Toms sealed the front nine with a score of 2-under par 34 and proceeded towards the back to add to his birdie count.
On stepping onto the back, the player decided to change the strategy on the fairways. Instead of using a fairway wood on most of the holes, the player decided to trust his wedges, as they had better resistance against the wind
and helped in retrieving the ball from the fairways, where the grass is really thick.
Owing to a witty decision, the player netted three more birdies against a single dropped shot and wrapped the day in lead. He carded a score of 4-under-par, 68. In addition to that, the player improved considerably in Green Hits
in Regulation. He relished a success rate of 83 percent in the second round as compared to 78 percent in the first.
Moreover, he remained consistent in driving accuracy, which proved that the player understood the long pars of TPC Sawgrass. However, there was a slight bulge in the putting stats, as he missed two putts in the 18-hole session. Needless
to say, the player was extremely happy with the improvement in his game.
While taking to the press, he said, “I haven't done anything great, haven't made a lot of putts, or chip-ins or anything like that. I've just played very, very solid golf. It's all about enjoying the game, enjoying the competition
and if you get the result, that is a bonus as well," added Toms, who won the 2001 PGA Championship.”
