David Toms makes unimpressive start to his title defence at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
David Toms, who was the hero of last year’s Crowne Plaza Invitational, faltered in the opening round this year at the Colonial Country Club on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Toms started his title defence on the back nine of the course and went two-over through the first four holes he played because of a double bogey on the par-three 13th hole.
"We weren't real sure where the wind was coming from," Toms said. "I came out of (the shot) a little bit and the wind took it from there".
“I just didn't get the ball very close to the hole," said Toms. "I put myself in some bad spots because I didn't handle the wind".
Thereafter, he parred nine holes and missed the par putt on fifth hole to go three over. Overall, the whole round proved to be a nightmare for him as the only birdie of the round came on the 17th hole (No. 8) of the day.
"I didn't feel I played a whole lot different than Zach and Sergio," he said. "I just found some tough spots".
By and large, his game was severely affected by the winds blowing up to 30 miles per hour.
Most of the time, he looked confused about making shots on the course. He misjudged the winds and made some bad shots, causing him to miss the fairways most of the times.
He is currently tied for the 104th position in the field of 123 players. Moreover, he is 10 strokes behind the leader Zach Johnson who recorded a bogey-free six-under par 64.
Despite the unimpressive start, Toms is confident to make a strong comeback in the upcoming rounds and said that he definitely has the ability to record a 62 on Friday.
Since his first appearance in the tournament in 2005, he has played a stunnig game, making calculated strokes and perfect swing.
"That's true," Toms said of the 74. "I just know how close I am to shooting 62 right now".
The golf commentators believe that he needs to work a little harder in order to tackle the wind gust projected for the second round of the event.
