David Toms misses the cut at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
David Toms, the defending champion at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, missed the cut after recording a five-over par two-round score at the Colonial Country Club on Friday, May 25, 2012.
Toms followed his four-over par 74 opening-round score with a one-over par 71 in the second round, which was not enough to break the three-over par cut line.
In total, he recorded two birdies against three bogeys to book a ticket for going back home.
The most disappointing fact of his performance at this year’s event was that he only managed to score three birdies in two rounds he played.
“It was the way I played golf,” Toms said. “I couldn’t make my putts and didn’t get close on my shots”.
Last year, Toms succeeded in recording back-to-back rounds of 62 to break the 36-hole record at Colonial.
Following his stunning win, he commented by saying that it was the most satisfying win of his career.
However, this year witnessed him make one of the disappointing performances of his career.
“I’m disappointed. Of course I am. Who wouldn’t be?” Toms said.
It was the second time in the history of the event that Toms missed the cut, as he did the same in 1999 for the first time. Moreover, he withdrew during the 2003 edition of the tournament.
Golf commentators believe that bad putting was the main reason of his failure in the event this year.
Toms hit 22 of the 28 fairways and recorded 26 greens in regulation, which is considered a good record at Colonial Country Club. However, he was worse with his putter and made 65 putts to circle three birdies.
In the meantime, Jason Dufner, who recorded two wins in the last three events on the PGA Tour, carded a six-under par 64 to take the top spot on the leaderboard.
He is currently has a two-stroke lead over Zach Johnson, the overnight leader, who recorded a three-under par 67.
Bo Van Pelt and Tommy Gainey were two strokes behind to share the third spot after recording six-under par 64 and three-under par 67, respectively.
