David Toms redeems himself with a lead at the Crown Plaza Invitational after the first round
American player David Toms posted an amazing eight under par 62 at
the Colonial Country Club to secure a lead at the Crown Plaza Invitational. The
player is not letting his playoff defeat at the Players Championship affect him
as he is now sharing the first round lead. Just four days ago, Toms missed a
par putt inside four feet and hence gave the victory to KJ Choi.
Making the most of his talent, the 44-year-old Toms only used 24 putts and finished the day tied with Chez Reavie in first place. Reavie also had a bogey free round as he also made eight under par 62 in the opening round.
Rickie Fowler was also leading at one point and time when he was at nine under
but unfortunately couldn’t maintain the lead. Fowler double bogeyed the par-four ninth hole for an opening 63 and is in third place.
Having won the twelve times on the PGA Tour, Toms gave an amazing
performance at the Colonial in the opening round. Wanting to finish the five-year winless drought, David Toms is in a good position to win the event.
Toms started really well making back to back birdies on the first and second hole. Making another couple of birdies on the seventh and ninth hole, Toms made the turn at four under par. Carding another birdie on the twelfth hole, Toms really put the golf
course on fire as he made another birdie on the fourteenth. Making another pair of birdies on the sixteenth and eighteenth hole, the player finished the day with an eight under par.
"I still need to put four rounds together." said Toms. "I had times back in the early 2000's where I won by a bunch. I played with the lead a lot of times and was able to maintain it and increase it. Until I'm able to do that again, I will still have that
doubt .But I do feel good about my game. If I continue to keep the putter hot, maybe I will have a good stretch here this week."
