David Toms returns from injury at the Transitions Championship – Golf News
The United States’ veteran golfer, David Wayne Toms, fired an opening round of four-under par 67 in the Transitions Championship to give a hint of his complete recovery from his back injury.
Toms suffered severe pain in his back while he was warming up for the third round at the Doral Resort & Spa in last week’s Cadillac Championship.
Thereafter, he called off his day after hitting a birdie on second hole. He was one-under par for the day and 3-under par for the tournament.
At the time of his injury, the reports came stating that his schedule leading to the Masters Tournament was in jeopardy.
However, Toms recovered quickly and, consequently, stunned his opponents at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida.
The former Louisiana State University golfer said that the injury made him feel troubled for his participation in the Masters Tournament.
He was preparing for the first major event of the year since the start of the season.
Therefore, the injury could have completely devastated his plans for the year. However, he was pleased to make a quick comeback, tied for the 10th position on Thursday, March 15, 2012.
The most interesting part of his day one on the tournament was his bogey-free performance. There was not a single hole that seemed to trouble him to miss the par putt.
As a result, he managed to score four birdies in total to finish six strokes off the lead.
Justin Rose, who won last week’s World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship, was also sharing the 10th spot with Toms after mixing six birdies with two bogeys.
The highlight of Rose’s day at Innisbrook was his beautiful 22-foot birdie putt on the par-four 12th hole.
Apart from Toms and Rose, there were a total of eight other players to end their rounds at four-under par 67.
Gary Woodland, the defending champion, was a stroke further behind to tie for the 20th position.
Overall, it was a mixed day with the European and United States’ players finishing in the 10 stroke bracket, when European players are looking for their third PGA Tour win in three consecutive weeks.
