David Toms wins the Crowne Plaza Invitational
David Toms smashed a score of 3-under-par 67 on Sunday to win the $6.2-million Crowne Plaza Invitational, which took place at the par-70 Colonial Country Club in Texas. The winner banked on $1.16-million and 500 FedEx points.
Toms came back to the course on Sunday to settle score with the Professional Golf Association Tour and this time, he was in not in the mood to surrender his bid into the hands of another South Korean. Last week, K.J Choi snatched
victory from Toms during the playoff at Players Championship, but this time, the American had nothing less than a win on his mind.
In pursuit of accomplishing the bid, the 44-year-old teed off from the front and produced just the type of scorecard that helped him push Charlie Wi down the leader board. He reeled two birdies, one eagle and one bogey to claim
that score.
The Louisianan was a point behind Wi, when he stepped into the final round. However, the table turned in his favour, when he walked towards the par-5 11th hole discussing the possibility of an eagle with his caddie Scott.
The duo discussed the trajectory of the tee shot and after a brink of an eye, the ball was plunging two yards to land between the bunker in the front and rough at the back. The veteran hurried to the fairway with a 4-iron and hit a crisp shot that left him
standing 85 feet away from the cup. With the wind directing towards south, the veteran took out his L wedge and sank an eagle to take an edge over Wi.
When asked to comment on the fabulous shot, Toms coined the shot as a turning point for him. He stated, “It just took a lot of guts. That's what I got by on. When stuff like that happens, it was meant to be. What a great day. I
played a great round of golf.”
In addition to the American ace relishing winner’s stats, he savoured the highest accuracy of the four-day session, which was 93 percent and hit 13 greens in regulation out of 18.
