David Villa thinks he can do more for Barcelona
David Villa, the striker for Barcelona and Spain, has said that he should do more for his club side. The season is on its peak, but Villa is still not performing at his optimum level. This has been problematic for Barcelona, as the Catalan
giants now face stiff resistance from their archrivals Real Madrid.
Villa is known for his genuine goal-scoring skills. His exceptional quality makes him the most feared striker in the whole world. Before coming to Barcelona, Villa was playing for Valencia in the Spanish La Liga. With his previous club,
Villa scored many stunning goals therefore catching the eye one of the biggest clubs in the world. In his first season at Valencia, in 2005-2006, Villa received the trophy for being Spanish player of the year. For his club Valencia, Villa remained the top
scorer for five seasons in a row.
Barcelona, on the other hand, was looking for a striker for quite some time. Although, they had the liberty of having Samuel Eto’o in their team, but he was sent away after a swap deal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Eto’o was unable to retain
his place in Barcelona’s squad despite having played a major role in their treble winning season of 2008-2009. However, the Cameroon international had flaws that pushed Pep Guardiola, the manager of Barcelona, in selling the player.
There were rumours that difference had arisen because of him in the team and later Ronaldinho, a former teammate of Eto’o, called him a selfish player.
Though Zlatan Ibrahimovic was an interesting addition to the squad he lacked overall performance and therefore he was sent away too. Despite being the best striker in Serie A for a very long time, Ibrahimovic choked after joining Barcelona.
The Swedish striker scored only 16 goals for his club, which was far less than the contribution made by Eto’o.
Now, Guardiola will look towards the established Spanish striker David Villa to fill in the gap. Villa was well known in Spanish circles as well, after replacing Raul as Spain’s number 7. Also, Villa was the top scorer in Euro 2008 and
World Cup 2010, helping his team to lift both the trophies. Apart from his achievements, Villa was technically gifted player and was well known for his team game. So, without wasting any further time Pep Guardiola signed the player for his club.
However, the goal scoring machine, David Villa, is facing a lot of problems in his new set up. He has come up with only four goals in La Liga so far, which is far less than what was originally expected of Villa. But, there is a little
bit of misfortune that has kept the terrific player from scoring goals for instance the impeccable finisher has found woodwork too many times.
In the face of tough resistance from Real Madrid, Barcelona needs Villa more than ever. The Catalans cannot rely on Lionel Messi to score goals for them in every match, so Villa and others would have to come up with something. Villa is
known for his deadly precision and it is time that he puts his skills to use, for his team.
The best performance by Villa came during the match against Sevilla, where he scored twice with two incredibly placed finishes. This performance really showed the fans what Villa is really capable of, if he gets his deadly touch back.
This is what Barcelona requires of him in every other match. El Classico is also just approaching and Villa would be hoping for a similar kind of performance in the most important match of his club career.
