David Wolochuk wants Fog Alert to improve in San Juan County Commissioners Handicap
Fog Alert ran the biggest race of his life at SunRay Park in April this year. David Wolochuk’s charge made a great impact by winning the Sunland Park Handicap (Dirt) by a couple of lengths.
After an excellent victory, the horse failed to continue his good form, when finishing seventh in the Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap at Lone Star Park last month. Since he failed to make an impression in the early stages of the 1m½f meeting, it was almost
impossible for him to secure a notable place on the table.
On the other hand, Austin Smith’s trainee, Nates Mineshaft, was super impressive in the beginning and an early advantage helped him grab the top rank by seven and a quarter lengths.
Yet, Fog Alert’s supporters don’t need to worry, as the 5-year-old has a great chance of getting back to the winning ways. The dashing runner is all set to show his magic in the San Juan County Commissioners Handicap, taking place at SunRay Park on Tuesday,
June 26th.
Fog Alert has already enjoyed success at this track and holds a very good chance of winning. However, the handler has made it clear that the horse will have to avoid the mistakes, which he made at Lone Star Park.
“For a closer, that 25 [opening quarter] doesn’t help you. It’s some of the same horses that were in the Sunland Handicap” said Wolochuk, who also co-owns Fog Alert.
Ahead of joining Wolochuk’s stable in October last year, he presented a fine show in the Sunland Park Derby, in which he claimed the fourth position. On Fog Alert’s Derby performance in 2010, the handler said: “When he ran in the derby he was fourth and
closing.”
“We knew we were reaching. [But] when I claimed the horse I knew one of the best races he’d ever run was at Sunland. And I knew he’d get the distance. It worked out,” he added.
Fog Alert has been doing a very decent job since the start of 2012. After narrowly missing the top spot in January, he raised his game significantly to steal two consecutive triumphs at Sunland Park.
