David Wright's homer lifts New York Mets over San Diego Padres 7-3 – MLB Update
David Wright hit a three-run homer on Wednesday, August 17 to help the New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 7-3 at Petco Park.
This magnificent win for the New York Mets gave them the first ever series win in more than nine years.
After losing the last game, the New York Mets descended in the ballpark with renewed confidence and with determination to do something different. The change came in the form of an emphatic victory.
Wright was understandably quite excited with this performance. "I can remember trying to do that when I was younger," Wright said. "You play long enough and you start getting different instincts."
The team manager, while showing no excessive joy, was indeed satisfied with the performance David Wright put in.
Mat Latos started the game with a scoreless inning against the New York Mets. The starter gave up two hits followed by Dillon Gee’s first inning shut-out. Both the starters were fairly strong in the first two innings whereby none of the hitters were able
to open up the account.
It was in the third inning that David Wright had one of the most breathtaking hits of the night that brought three-run homer for the New York Mets, giving them an early 3-0 lead by the end of the inning. Dillon Gee was exceptionally solid and defended the
lead with remarkable ease.
As the Mets had a firm lead in the game, the San Diego Padres opted for the reliever Pat Neshek. However, Angel Pagan scored an RBI single in the seventh to take the New York Mets lead to 4-0. Aaron Cunningham was the first Padres’ hitter to score in the
seventh inning to bring the lead down to 4-1.
But once Joe Thatcher came on the mound, Angel Pagan had another hit, bringing home two runs for the Mets following whom Willie Harris had another single that took the lead to comfortable 7-1 for the New York Mets.
Bobby Parnell tossed a shut-out eighth to maintain the lead. Nick Hundley had a single followed by Alberto Gonzalez against the Mets’ closer Ryota Igarashi. However, Igarashi threw some solid pitches to wrap up the game with 7-3 victory for the New York
Mets.
The Mets put in a tremendous effort as they managed to convincingly defeat the Padres. San Diego will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the Mets can carry their winning momentum with this much
needed victory. The Mets will be looking for a surge in their performance to get some more wins before the postseason.
