David Wright ambiguous about the future and contract extension with New York Mets - MLB Update
The end of the season for the New York Mets is going to be accompanied by speculation regarding the future of their third baseman David Wright. Both the organisation and Wright are interested to continue the relationship even beyond the period of the current
agreement. However, the fact the Mets are financially weak gives reason to believe that offering a contract extension to the likes of Wright will not be affordable for them.
Wright has a tremendous season so far. He has been a sole run contributor for the team on a number of occasions. His presence in the club means a lot for the Mets. His contract will come to an end after 2013 provided the Mets use their option on him for
the next year.
After this, either he will go for free agency or earns a contract extension. Making any decision about Wright will pose a great dilemma for the officials as his services for the club are immense. He is a franchise leader in terms of number of hits struck
in his career.
As far as Wright is concerned, staying in the clubhouse until the conclusion of his career is the first priority. However, he is equally prepared to face the reality which omits him from the club and puts the third baseman on his way toward experiencing
the free agency.
Wright has put light on the limited budget the Mets deal with and has stressed the need to spend some money on the players present in free agency in order to improve.
"I think we've demonstrated we have some talent in our minor leagues," Wright said. "Some of the young arms that have come up have been really impressive. But, at the same time, of course it's important that we can make a trade or sign a free agent and be
able to spend some money. This is my philosophy on it. And that's why I'm going to sit down with these guys at some point and discuss it.”
Clearly the biggest issue as the negotiations start will be duration and money. It will be interesting to see how the Mets tackle the predicament and announce a declaration about Wright during the off-season.
