David Wright and R.A Dickey are uncomfortable with New York Mets’ appeal for no-hitter game - MLB
While the New York Mets’ manager Terry Collins has lodged official request to Major League Baseball for the ruling of a no-hitter game, with the approval of General Manager Sandy Alderson, both David Wright and R.A Dickey are dismayed.
Not wishing to give an impression that they are running after laurels and using various means for it, Dickey stated that even if the decision comes in their favour now, its charm will be lost.
Last game in which Dickey started was a one-hitter game. The only hit he allowed was not entirely due to his fault. It was a barehanded fumble by the third-baseman Wright that led the umpire to declare a hit, depriving Dickey of his well-deserved no-hitter
game.
Immediately after the game, Collins decided to appeal to MLB and ask for the change in the ruling of one-hitter. The management, even knowing that chances for the decision coming in their favour are minimal, went ahead with the move.
However, there is one silver-lining and that is the meticulous care the matter is receiving from Executive VP of Baseball Operations, Joe Torre, who is reviewing the case on behalf of MLB. Trying to add input of most of the experts, he aims to come up with
the decision only when all the areas are analysed appropriately.
“Obviously it’s a no-hitter (at stake) and I have had some limited footage on what I’ve watched,” Torre said. “Even though I’ve made these decisions on official scoring on a daily basis, obviously with what’s at stake here, I want to make sure that we give
the decision every opportunity to get more than my opinion. I have an opinion on what I’ve seen and I’d like to see more... We have to be careful not to, because it is a no-hitter, to do something only having that in mind.”
The decision is expected by the weekend. Irrespective of MLB’s verdict, Collins is of the view that what they have done is just to justify with the requirements of the play and make sure fair play prevails.
Dickey holds similar views and believes that credibility of the game will be upheld with the appeal that they have made.
Instead of getting carried away by the pull of events, Dickey will do well to stay steady and keep putting up splendid performances.
