David Wright becomes victim of poor election process as he will not Start All-Star game-MLB Feature
While the All-Star Game is an ultimate reflection of a pinnacle of talent existing in the game of baseball, the case of David Wright can become a reason for one to contradict this. Unable to get enough votes due to better fan-support his rival received,
he has failed to make it to the line-up despite putting up splendid performance in the season.
What Wright has shown on plate this year is rarely seen. Using at-bats to drive in runs and keep the bases active all of the time, the National League is incomplete without him. Either it is a demonstration of classic baseball run manufacturing techniques
or modern slugging mastery, Wright has been near perfect.
It is ironic that a player has been pushed aside just because of the fact that he was unable to garner enough support from the fans. Put it another way, the New York Mets do not hold greater fan-base and therefore regardless of a baseball maestro of a player,
one who belongs to a club which boasts densely populated fandom is more likely to earn the pride of playing in the Midseason Classic.
One will say it amounts to discrimination and a sheer violation of merit and out-and-out exploitation of weaknesses of the system. It is like deprivation of rights to a state merely because it has fewer people and the other has more for enjoying benefits
of a large fan-base. The bottom line is that it is hard to comprehend as to how one can defend the exclusion of David from starting line-up on July 10.
Paradoxically, a player who has not achieved even half of what Wright managed has earned the call. Pablo Sandoval from the San Francisco Giants has edged out Wright and in turn has eclipsed his splendours on the plate this year. It has kind of a trivialised
what Wright has shown for the Mets. Scores of RBIs and the moments which saw him bordering on making history have been veiled behind the facade of an undeserving selection for the day.
Moving on, when someone after two years from now will ask about luminaries surfacing in 2012 regular season, there are more chances that Wright will never get his fair share. His name will not be able to earn the kind of recognition it deserves. How he lifted
the Mets from the shambles and became a stabilising force for a faltering offence will be obliterated from the imagination of the fans.
Though he remains in the category of reserve All-Star Game infielders, it certainly does not justify with his contribution.
Irrespective of election, it is great to see David not taking it to heart. His desire to contribute for the National League on the day has not vanished. Ready to unleash his best in case the opportunity arises and not getting demoralised, he is setting the
right precedent for youngsters.
Not taking the story as an instrument to gain media favour, he has actually proved that he really is a great player, one whose excellence is independent of an appearance in All-Star Game or anything like this.
One will hope that he is just focused on taking the club to the play-offs and as soon as All-Star break concludes he resumes his expedition from where he left.
