David Wright conscious of tough competition in National League East-MLB Update
New York Mets’ third baseman, David Wright has a thorough insight of the level of competition that they will face in the National League East Division during the 2013 season.
Having the likes of the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies there means that the Mets will require something out of the ordinary to happen from their ranks for beating them regularly.
Unfortunately, the majority of their players lack credentials to stand up against such might oppositions.
Their situation will worsen after the starting pitcher R.A Dickey has been traded by them to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Wright agrees that the Mets face a dearth of star players in the team, especially after the exclusion of Dickey.
For the same reason, he has stressed on the preparations and a proper planning before taking on the opponents during the season.
While Wright mentions a fierce competition in the division, he has not lost hopes entirely with regard to the 2013 expedition of his team.
He has pointed out remarkable success that the Mets achieved during the first half of the last season as the basis of his optimism.
Wright believes if they can manage to maintain that kind of momentum throughout the season, winning laurels will not be a problem for the club.
During 2012, the Mets started off their campaign in such a dominating fashion that it looked as if they are going to achieve heights of success this year.
However, later they could not continue performing well as they declined sharply.
Wright is hopeful that even as Dickey leaves, the team has the competitiveness to end up the season with flying colours.
"You look around in our division and, of course, with or without R.A. you're talking about a very, very competitive and very, very tough division," Wright said. "Obviously you lose a 20-game winner and we understand that it's going to be a tremendous challenge.
But it's the same thing as last year, when the expectations for us as a team from the outside were very low. We got off to a tremendous start and couldn't finish and really trailed off the second half.
It will be interesting to see as to what extent the exclusion of Dickey from the Mets can affect their performance during the upcoming season.
