David Wright delivers a solid performance in his first Spring Training game - MLB Update
After all speculations about his Spring Training debut, David Wright finally recovers from his left rib cage tightness and played against the St. Louis Cardinals. Seemingly as an immediate effect of his presence, the New York Mets broke their growing losing
streak by winning and gained much needed confidence before the regular season starts.
Wright was acrobatic on field, making subtle co-ordinations with starting pitcher Johan Santana and protecting him successfully from being hit.
Though not best with his movements on the plate, he showed that with a practice of few more games, he will be right back to his best.
“The smaller details of the game add to kind of thinking about it rather than going out there and reacting, and that’s what the next week or nine days is going to be for, just kind of getting it to where [the game] is a reaction rather than having to think
about it too much,” He said.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins was growing frustrated after every loss. Injuries of some key players coming out in almost every game were affecting him to a point of discouragement. He now feels confident after beating the Cardinals 6-3 and looks ahead, assured
of players’ recovery from injuries within time.
“I lost my patience early due to all the nicks, but hopefully right now it’s going to pay off,” said Collins.
He is looking at their injuries as sort of a blessing in disguise for his side. Since he believes, they will return to the season after enjoying a rest of a few weeks and they will be healthier and more energetic on the field.
The fact Wright showed little signs of pain today and instead appeared extra active comes as a reason for the Mets to expect good results from their injured players after they come back.
Days before Wright started batting practice for playing a game, it was hardly in anybody’s imagination that he will be so impressive in his comeback outing.
One of the loopholes seen in the Mets thus far in training is their inability to score many runs, as is evident from just 79 runs scored in Spring Training. Since Wright holds an amazing career record in this regard (.300 batting average and 1248 hits),
he will be looking to unleash his best in crucial games and the Mets will experience a splendid 2012 regular season.
