David Wright fit to play for New York Mets in opener against Philadelphia Phillies – MLB Update
After a two day examination by a hand specialist, the New York Mets’ third basemen David Wright has been allowed to resume play with the team. In a game against Washington Nationals he had his right pinkie fractured and thus missed out in the next two games.
As soon as an injury was reported, his likely run on the disabled list was under discussion. Management was patience enough to hold his entry on DL and instead believed that he will be back shortly.
Rightly so, he is now fit and is in the contention to play the series opener against Philadelphia Phillies. It is not yet officially confirmed whether he will be rested for a few games or will be given the go-ahead right away.
From the last two defeats that the Mets experienced and the fact these were the sole ones coming off in his absence, chances are he will be pushed into the line-up with little delay.
After all, they have to regain some momentum before sinking any deeper as had happened with them in Spring Training.
Wright holds special significance to the line-up, in terms of bringing homers and valuable RBIs. He has proved this earlier in the season.
Because of the same reason by the time he wounded his finger and sat out in two games, experts started became pessimistic about the Mets’ prospects in the season during his absence.
So far in the season he has been 7 for 12 along with one home-run and four RBIs, the kind of performance Mets will be looking forward to a continuation of as he returns.
Given that Mets consist largely of youth, being a veteran with 728 career RBIs until 2011, Wright has lot to guide the younger lot.
His entry will be interesting in the context that the Mets four game winning streak was broken in his absence and as they recorded two losses afterwards, to what extent they were linked to his absence will be known as soon as he resumes play.
As for Wright himself, finding the same composure he had managed before the injury will be critical to success. Therefore the sooner he gets back, the better it will be for the Mets.
