David Wright goes past Ed Kranepool in number of hits and leads New York Mets – MLB News
New York Mets’ third baseman David Wright surpasses the 1418 career hits of the first baseman Ed Kranepool by slamming two on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In turn he has become the leader of the club in terms of having struck the greatest number
of hits in the history of the organisation.
This landmark achievement is another addition to distinctions he has earned this season. He has been the Mets’ most consistent batter and has played a major role in the first half of the season success of the team.
In the game before Wednesday, he struck two hits and tied the record of Kranepool. However, he resisted celebrating the milestone while he was concerned about the performance of the Mets.
The fact New York fall at the bottom half of the table has eclipsed the laurels he has claimed so far.
Wright is under the scanner from the authorities as far as his contract extension by New York is concerned. Both the club and Wright have shown their intent to sign a deal but there are so many issues that have yet to be discussed. For a financially struggling
club like the Mets, it will be extremely difficult to freeze up money for number of years.
Wright though is happy inside his heart is disheartened by the dismal win-loss record of the Mets. He intends to relish his success after this season because expressing the pleasure of his individual performance while the team decline is not good.
"I don't think you can sit back and really enjoy this until you're done playing -- or, maybe, enjoy it a little bit in the offseason," Wright said. "I'm not programmed, and it's a little odd and uncomfortable talking about something individual like this,
when we've had our struggles in the second half and haven't done what I think all of us feel like we were capable of doing. But I'll enjoy it at some point -- probably not tonight."
Wright will be looking to continue striking cleanly and amassing hits for his team. By ending the season on a high, he can start the next year fully motivated and more focused. It will be interesting to see as to how he lifts the Mets’ offence in the upcoming
matches.
