David Wright has market set after Evan Longoria’s 10-year contract with Tampa Bay Rays-MLB Update
David Wright can take heart from the fact that Evan Longoria, who just like him is also a third baseman, has earned contract extension from Tampa Bay Rays. A standard price based on which he can determine the total worth of his own contract with the Mets
has been set for him now.
Wright is under negotiations with the Mets, seeking a long-term contract extension. Although the Mets want to retain him, they kept quiet with regard to exact modalities of the new deal and did not speak much until recently.
It is easy to conclude that the Mets did so in order to get some knowledge about the market conditions. The deal between the Rays and Longoria has certainly provided valuable information to the Mets about the market.
For the same reason perhaps, sources report that the Mets have also offered extension to Wright. As per the initial reports, a contract for seven-years is under discussion with Wright but so far no official confirmation has been made.
Both the parties have yet to resolve some issues before they give a final touch to the agreement. It is unlikely that formal declaration will be announced before the Baseball Winter Meetings.
One thing that Wright can be sure about at the moment is that he is on his way to clinch a blockbuster agreement. His value for the team is enormous, given the kind of role he plays for the offence of the team.
Without him, the offensive department of the New York Mets looks extremely mediocre.
However, giving him a lengthy extension will come at the expense of overpaying him for the Mets at the time of his decline down the line.
Every star player goes through lean periods and that is when they cost the team the most.
Due to this, the clubs account for various factors before they allow someone to stay in their organisation for such a long time. The Mets will be aware of this and make sure they mitigate their risks as much as possible.
It will be interesting to see how the Mets deal with Wright and sign a new contract with him.
