David Wright is on his way to script history as he posts an extra-ordinary batting average – MLB
Hardly a game passes without witnessing huge hits coming off the New York Mets’ third baseman, David Wright. As soon as he recovered from an injury earlier, he thumped back on the plate and unleashed his best as a hitter.
Regardless of an outcome of the game, he has been steady and appeared busy in accomplishing some target.
Based on his performance so far in the season and looking at how consistently he is striking hits, somewhere down the line, expecting him to achieve an history making milestone is not an un-realistic assumption.
Back in 1941, Ted Williams had managed a .400 batting average throughout the season. Since then no player has challenged this monumental record.
Certainly, Wright has dared in this regard. Currently he is hitting more than .400 and if his ability to build on good performances and does not get carried away by achievements is anything to go by, he may well maintain this until conclusion of the season.
As per his contract, Wright is passing through penultimate years as a Mets and if the club does not go after him at the end of the deal, he will be lurking in free agency.
Analysis are being made at the moment about whether he is worth giving a contract extension or a let off is more plausible, based on an assumption of his prospective decline.
While commenting on his performance, Wright turned humble and stated that base-runners are as much praise worth as he is for his performance. For as long as he can draw desired pitches, he says, he can keep hitting like this.
“It makes my job a lot easier when the guys in front of me are getting on and the guys behind me are swinging the bats the way they are,” Wright said. “It’s a fun lineup to be in right now. I don’t think it’s necessarily me, I think it’s more the guys in
front of me are wreaking havoc on the base paths and the guys behind me are getting me a lot of good pitches to hit.”
It will be fascinating to see how much longer he can sustain his incredible run of form on the plate.
