David Wright makes a sacrifice to help New York Mets find an outfielder - MLB Update
By allowing New York Mets to slash his salary for the 2013 Major League season, David Wright has put them in a position to visit free agency and find some outfielders that are needed by them.
The $16 million option the Mets exercised on Wright is a part of the long-term contract extension that the club signed with him a week ago.
If the Mets pay Wright all what they owe him for 2013, they will be left with a little amount of money to spend on other areas. For example, hiring an outfielder and a catcher during the offseason will be extremely difficult for them.
Wright has tried to help the club put up a solid performance in 2013. By letting the officials defer a portion of his salary and pay it later, he has permitted the club to address issues with their roster comfortably.
Certainly, Wright did not resort to brinkmanship. Instead, he gave an equal amount of importance to the financial limitations of the club.
The Mets are not financially equipped enough to make splashy spending in the market. For the same reason, they are taking so much time in negotiations with R.A. Dickey for offering him a contract extension.
Dickey won a great number of games for the team in the last season and yet the club is reluctant to grant him the sum of money that he wants.
Wright is conscious of the needs of the club as much as the General Manager, Sandy Alderson is.
"It was not only going through some of our prospects and some of our minor leaguers player by player, but also what our needs are -- what he plans on giving to get these needs," Wright said. "Obviously without going into too much detail, it was an important
conversation."
Wright’s enthusiasm for winning games for the team is commendable. It is a great sign for the fans as well as the club, because getting a star player to show such passion lifts the whole unit.
Meeting the expectations is a challenge for Wright. Given the fact that he is a great player, it is easy to predict he will accomplish this task.
It will be fascinating to see him spearheading the offence of the team next year.
