David Wright on the verge of being sent to disabled list by New York Mets - MLB Update
Third baseman David Wright saw his right pinkie fractured as he confronts a probable place on the disabled list. Official announcement for DL has been held back in the hope that swelling which currently is the reason of his exclusion will dissipate before
Friday.
If the swelling actually wears off, he will be right in the contention for playing series opener against Philadelphia Phillies.
As per the doctor, all depends on how he actually feels with the swelling. They believe if he is comfortable with throws even with the fractured finger, he can very well play games.
Possible replacements have been declared by the Mets for third base. Daniel Murphy and Ronny Cedeno will likely fill the position in his absence.
Just when the Mets will think of building on their first three wins, his injury has pushed their momentum back a little bit.
Given his career record of .301 batting average and 729 RBIs, Mets can easily be put back to their pre-season label of one of the weakest sides in NL East Division in his absence.
Wright himself understands of what he holds in prospect for his side. Disheartened, he aims to return at the earliest.
"I'm going to wake up tomorrow, hopefully the swelling goes down and we start getting it better," Wright said. "For right now, it's swollen. I'm just trying to ice it and stabilize it and see how it feels tomorrow. ... You can't determine anything when it's
puffy and swollen like it is now."
Manager Terry Collins is aware of what happened to him last year when a slight injury eventually cost him many games out from the season.
Terming it the worst possible scenario if it happens this year, he believes the kind of swings he is having on the plate at the moment can be pivotal for the Mets in the games ahead.
"It would be the worst thing that could happen right now. It's his top hand, bottom finger," Collins said.
By the time Wright undergoes examination by doctors, the real nature of the injury will become clear. It will be easier to predict his fate in the season and that of the Mets by then.
