David Wright re-signs with New York Mets - MLB Update
Third baseman David Wright and New York Mets have agreed to a record $138 million deal for eight more years. Sources say that this particular deal is the richest in the Mets’ recent history that will allow Wright to potentially end his career with them in 2020.
Wright, 29, last played for the Mets and finished with consistent numbers. He achieved .306 hitting average along with 21 homers, 93 RBIs and .391 OBP. Overall he is carrying .301 career hitting average along with 204 home-runs, 818 RBIs and .381 OBP.
"This is a great step forward, It shows the organization steps up when they have to. It's great for the Mets and our fans. I had all the confidence in the world it was going to get done before spring training," manager Terry Collins said as he explained in the media about this recent development in the Mets' franchise.
Mets and Wright have been talking about a potential extension since 2012 Major League has ended. Earlier some sources have also speculated in different online news websites that Wright might not get any extension and could be traded along with ace pitcher R.A. Dickey.
However, now it has been confirmed that Mets and Wright reached an agreement for the next eight years. R.A. Dickey’s trade could be possible as Kansas City Royals are showing great interest in him.
Experts believe that this recent development is quite a healthy sign for the Mets. The team played poorly in the past season and certainly needed Wright for their future consistent results.
Though they started the season well but at the middle stages, they consistently lost too many games which proved disastrous as they came out from the season humiliated.
Some of the Mets’ top executives later suggested some initiatives which were needed to boost up their current roster’s productivity. Wright’s re-signing was also one of the suggested initiatives.
With Wright, some say it will be a good season for the Mets. They struggled last season, but now they will enter the fresh season with more confidence and show their true offensive game plays.
