David Wright receives seven-year extension offer from New York Mets, according to sources-MLB
New York Mets’ third baseman David Wright has been offered a contract extension for seven years by the club, as per the sources close to the matter. However, there are little chances that the deal will be confirmed soon.
Ever since the beginning of the offseason, experts are discussing whether retaining Wright is in the interest of the organisation or not. They have given their suggestions in this regard.
By-and-large, awarding contract extension to Wright has been considered a more appropriate option by the experts.
Wright reached heights of success while being a part of New York. Achieving a number of laurels, he is viewed as a pride for the organisation by the Mets’ fans.
His ability to strike hits in almost every game awards him an enviable distinction in the Mets’ line-up.
Indeed, his absence from the team will be disastrous for the offence of the club. As was seen during 2012 season, sometimes he becomes the only player who contributes for RBIs while the rest of the batters struggle immensely.
It remains to be seen how Wright has responded to the offer being made to him. Keeping in view the length of the new contract, it can be believed that Wright will be fairly pleased.
"There are offers going back and forth," the source said.
So far, information about money has not surfaced. It can be expected within the next few days as further developments in the negotiations take place.
Apart from Wright, R.A. Dickey is another player that seeks a contract renewal from the Mets.
Commenting on the chances of being awarded a new deal to Wright, Dickey has expressed a great amount of confidence, stating that the Mets cannot afford to overlook him.
"I mean, imagine the Atlanta Braves without Chipper Jones," Dickey said. "You just can't. I think they're going to reach an agreement."
Dickey tried to draw a comparison between Wright and third baseman of Atlanta Braves, Chipper Jones to clarify the importance of the former for the Mets. He believes exclusion of Wright from the Mets will come at the expense of the effectiveness of their
offence.
It will be fascinating to keep track of the events concerning the agreement renewal of Wright in the next couple of days.
