David Wright seven hits away of passing Ed Kranepool’s all-time record for New York Mets – MLB
David Wright grows excited as he heads toward becoming the all-time hits leader for the New York Mets. Currently this record is held by Ed Kranepool. Given the fact that Wright has been striking hits on a regular basis in the season, it is easy to believe
within a few weeks he will supersede Kranepool.
However, in the last two matches, he has struggled at the plate. This may be out of the pressure which accumulates in the face of such an important milestone.
Wright has played the All-Star Game owing to the consistent shows he put up in the first half of the season.
He has been among the few players for the team that has stepped up whenever the team is about to slip into long losing streaks. Furthermore, an enviable position on the table that the Mets maintained in the beginning of the season had a lot to do with offensive
contributions by Wright.
His incredible performances have led to discussions about a contract extension for Wright. Both the Mets and Wright have shown interest in signing the deal.
If the Mets let him off after next year, he will be a free agent which means he can fetch expensive contracts. He boasts credentials and the kind of record which can encourage any team to offer him a blockbuster deal.
Currently he is focused on playing for the Mets and becoming their leader in terms of the number of hits.
“I’m proud of the fact I’ve been able to stay healthy and be as consistent as I think I have for the last eight or nine years. You’re going to have some years, some weeks that are better than others. But I take a lot of pride in going out there and trying
to prepare myself to play at a certain level,” Wright said.
He has expressed his desire to take over Kranepool and earn the prestige. Kranepool is ahead of him by seven hits at the moment.
“I hope I get there,” he said. “Obviously, it means a lot to me personally.”
It will be interesting to see how many games Wright will take to surpass Kranepool’s record.
