David Wright shines as New York Mets defeat Houston Astros 9-1 – MLB Update
New York Mets’ third baseman David Wright had a notable day with the bat as he struck a solo home run with a two-run double in the Mets’ 9-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Citi Field in New York on April 21.
Wright expressed his excitement as, “It's nice to have those kinds of games where you have the good starting pitching and the hitting.”
Jason Bay also gave the Mets officials a positive feeling by hitting like a game winner. He made two runs on a single hit and posted those runs on the error of Hunter Pence towards the right-field position. Bay walked around the four bases for the first
time in this season. With that convincing victory, the Mets completed their seven-game winning streak.
The Mets’ Manager Terry Collins was happy with the performance of Bay. He said, “Obviously having Jason Bay back -- to pull these guys together is one of the best things that could happen. I think his presence in the clubhouse, in the dugout, and on the
field is a big factor.”
Bay missed out the first games of the regular season due to a rib cage injury. He also suffered a concussion during the mid of last year. The other two veterans, Ike Davis and Mike Nickeas both struck home runs for the Mets. The homer hit by Davis was a
huge shot over the centre-field spot.
It was the miserable moment for the Mets when Angel Pagan left the game on collision with the second baseman Justin Turner during fourth inning. He suffered a pain in his left side muscle. It seemed that Pagan will miss next couple of games due to the injury.
Willie Harris replaced Pagan in the sixth inning.
The Mets’ starter Chris Capuano pitched well right through the seven innings. He allowed just one run on six hits including one earned run and four strike-outs. The Mets’ reliever also restricted the Astros to one score by not giving a single run in two
inning pitches.
The Astros’ Manager Brad Mills praised the pitching performance of Capuano. Mills said, “He was throwing the ball well and we were trying to work him as much as we could, but we knew it was going to be tough to score some runs against him.”
On the other side, the Astros’ opener Michael Bourn was grounded out at the start of the first inning without scoring a run. Brett Wallace was the first dominant batter for the Astros to attain the base but posted just a double run. The Astros’ second baseman
Matt Downs took an RBI single against Capuano in the seventh inning.
