David Wright “unhappy” before offer extended to seven-years - MLB Update
As per sources, star third baseman David Wright was not satisfied when New York Mets put a six-year contract on the table. It was when the Mets extended their offer to seven-years that both the parties began to agree on the deal.
The Mets can be apprehensive of committing a single player for such a long time, because they want to avoid overpaying when Wright declines down the stretch.
Being a club that suffers extreme financial problems, it is understandable as to why they took so long before they made an offer to Wright.
Wright, on the other hand, is banking on his remarkable 2012 season expedition to expect the desired deal. He aims to finish his career with the Mets by being awarded a lengthy contract extension.
Although he likes to stay with the same organisation, his value will be very high if he tests free agency after 2013. He can join the free agent market next year if the deal is not finalised between him and the Mets.
Wright is considered to be a pride for the organisation. His contributions as one of the most consistent batters in the National League are invaluable for the club. If he continues with his incredible run of form, he can deliver something substantial next
year.
Wright can feel himself lucky for having a standard price of his new contract set in the form of a recent agreement between Evan Longoria and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Certainly, this will have strengthened his negotiating power and put Wright in a better position to fetch an expensive deal.
It is for the same reason perhaps that the Mets are willing to grant him more than $100 million for seven-years, despite having a weak financial condition.
There is a possibility that without the contract of Longoria in place, the Mets will have taken more time to reveal their offer.
It is not yet certain when the official declaration of the agreement will be announced. The Mets are not revealing further information regarding the offer. They are trying to evade reporters by saying that “the negotiations have not reached the conclusion
yet”.
Within the next few days, further developments will happen.
Fans will be excited about knowing more about the possible deal and getting the assurance of Wright playing for New York until his retirement.
