David Wright will replace Darryl Strawberry with one more RBI for New York Mets - MLB Update
Defying all odds, David Wright remains the top hitter for the New York Mets in the season. One more RBI away from taking over Darryl Strawberry as one of the only Mets with the highest RBIs, he has proven as amongst the strongest of the links behind a recent
unexpected upsurge by the Mets.
His injury is an only concern with the management and because of the same reason his contract extension does not appear as obvious as one may fancy.
The fact Wright is one of the few veterans with the club, his experience can be a great help for the youth.
He has seen through the realities of being a rookie or ordinary player among top hitters and then as a premier third baseman. Therefore he can guide the youth better.
"I love it," Wright says. "Maybe we don't have the talent or experience or household names that other teams have. But give me guys that work the way these guys work and play the way we try to play the game, and I'll sign up for that."
However an issue that lies ahead for him is that of his contract termination in the next year and how Mets are going to use 2013 option they have on him.
Will Mets let him go for free agency as they did in the case of Jose Reyes or his regular season performance will be enough to overshadow the influence of his injury-prone body are the kind of questions he will be dealing with in the days to come.
For the moment neither Wright nor manager Terry Collins has given any indication in this regard. Wright believes that since he is bound by the contract at present, he cannot act beyond his commitments in the agreement.
"It's hard enough playing this game," Wright says. "It's a lot harder when you're asked questions every day that you really have no control over. I'm not a free agent. I'm under contract this year and the team has control of me for next year. I have zero
options right now."
As he plays more games down the line, many laurels await him. Apart from maximum number of RBIs, milestone of accumulating most runs while being in the Mets is not far. One will only hope that his body will not betray him.
