David Wright’s career second stint at shortstop comes against Philadelphia Phillies - MLB Update
Justin Turner was basking the joy of getting a chance at short-stop, as replacement for the New York Mets’ injured player Ronny Cedeno. Much to his displeasure, it did not last long.
In the game against the Philadelphia Phillies, his ankle became twisted while on the run between bases. This, as a result became the reason behind third-baseman Wright’s standing at short-stop for the second time in his career.
Wright was excited about a sudden switch on the park. Playing as short-stop, impromptu was as a much a challenge as it was shocking. As he accepted the call of the team right away and played at short-stop throughout the game, he did a reasonably better job.
He had to make immediate adjustments in his new role. For Wright, it was like becoming more pro-active and swirling anticipations for every single pitch and therefore, doing justice with its standards was not easy.
What made the job more exciting for him was the fact that he was there for only one game. Afterwards, the Mets had to call up replacements. Thus, watching him jumping, reading every throw in earnest and trying to pull off stunners was no surprise.
After the game, Wright felt for Turner, who had an opportunity to impress the management by playing a complete season. Turner was going through a perfect time and was disheartened over getting his progress halted.
"We're thin at shortstop, obviously, and it's tough to see him go down, especially with the way he's been swinging the bat lately," Wright said. "It seemed like he found something. He's been a big contributor off the bench. He got a chance to play every
day, and he was playing really well, so it's tough to see."
While sharing experience at short-stop, he talked of the difficulty he faced there.
"It's kind of fried into your brain, that third base is kind of second nature," Wright said. "At shortstop, you have to think about it.”
Regardless of his time at short-stop, what matters the most for Wright is making fine plays as a third baseman. It is that position in the ballpark, he will be looking to make improvements in and help the Mets restrict batters.
