David Wright’s health makes his likely contract extension by New York Mets uncertain - MLB Update
David Wright waits for being sent to the Disabled List as he gradually recovers from a fractured right finger. As important as he is, first four wins New York Mets had at the start of the season owed immensely to the hits he contributed.
Given the kind of performance he put up, there is no other opinion in the management that he will be given the contract extension. What concerns them the most however is the health issues he has been carrying from the last season.
The day Wright’s right pinkie was fractured those concerns was aggravated and put his contract extension further in doubt as a result.
Although his finger was fractured due to a wrong dive he went after than anything coming off due to his injury prone body, he had gotten hurt one way or the other.
Last year Wright started from a mild injury which became severe with time later in the season to such an extent that he had to spend two months out on the Disabled List.
That very episode can repeat again and the perception is that if it happens again, regardless of how important he is for the offence, it will be difficult for the management to retain him anymore.
The fact that the Mets already are under a financial mess and thus are prone to take conservative decisions, anything apparently looking like a dead investment to them will never be pursued.
As happened in the case of a five year contract extension deal with Jon Niese, one can infer that management seeks certainty at the moment more than anything else.
Inside sources suggest however even if his body is vulnerable to injuries, he is still on the preference list of the management. At-least the club will lean on him more than they did on Jose Reyes, who the club let go and did not find an investment worth
going after.
There is no serious debate underway in the club on this matter right now. It is however expected that soon this question will be raised as his actual contract will be coming to an end after 2013 option.
Hand specialist has cleared Wright for the play but manager Terry Collins held him back for the game giving him rest.
If he can prove to the management by sustaining through the current season, he can rightly convince the club for a contract extension. It will be interesting to see how far he goes in this regard.
