David Wright’s homer helps New York Mets defeat Houston Astros 6-4 – MLB Update
The New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros 6-4 at the Minute Maid Park, Houston on Friday, May 13.
Friday’s game was dominated by David Wright whose first homer after April 24 energized the Mets. His homer came at a very critical time as New York was trailing 4-1. Houston had the edge at the start but could not maintain it largely because the Mets’ offence
which suddenly sprang into action and took away a winning game from the Astros’ hands.
The Mets’ team manager, remarkable optimism kept the team going despite consecutive defeats, was satisfied with Wright’s performance. "It tells me that this guy needs a break every now and then because he plays the game as hard as anybody in the league,"
Collins said. "And when you run him out there 30-something times in a row, he is going to run out of gas a little bit."
Friday’s game seemed to have an inauspicious start for New York as it was Carlos Lee of Houston who scored the first run for the team. Lee’s sacrifice fly to right gave an early 1-0 lead to Houston in the third inning.
Dillon Gee was subject to massive hits in the sixth inning when Houston’s offence scored no less than three runs to give a 4-0 lead to the Astros. Chris Johnson was first to score, following home Bill Hall singled to left. Humberto Quintero scored the third
run of the inning to pile up the Astros’ lead 4-0.
Jason Bay scored the first run for the Mets when Bud Norris came to pitch for the Astros. Bay homered to left to bring the Astros lead down to 4-1. It was in the eighth inning that Mets’ hitters showed their charm. Fernando Martinez scored a two-run homer
to make it 4-3 for New York.
However, just when Houston had their lead intact, Wright rose to the occasion and hit a homer, making it 5-4 for New York. Taylor Buchholz pitched a shut-out eighth inning to maintain the lead for the Mets, as Jason Pridie scored the sixth run for New York.
The aggressive offence that the Mets put on was then guided to victory by Francisco Rodriguez’s shut-out ninth inning. His fastballs were unplayable for the Astros’ hitters and subsequently paved the way for a 6-4 victory for New York against Houston.
