David Zabriskie wins sixth stage in 2011 Amgen Tour of California - Cycling News
Garmin-Cervelo team’s David Zabriskie won the sixth stage of 2011 Amgen Tour of California time trail race in Solvang on Friday, May 20, while Christopher Horner retained his overall lead and took yellow jersey.
Garmin-Cervelo took the race under control in the last kilometres and the 32-year-old, David crossed the distance of 24 kilometres time trial in 30 minutes and 36 seconds.
Three-time race winner, Levi Leipheimer of the RadioShack team displayed good performance and gained second spot on the podium with 14 seconds behind David. Tejay Van Garderen finished third with the difference of 40 seconds.
After winning the sixth stage, David told the media, "I knew the last stretch was a headwind and I had to go hard there. I didn't feel like I was super strong, but it was a good ride, Today was obviously the best I've ever done here. I had no radio, just
did my own thing and it worked."
Crucially, the race leader Horner finished sixth place in the time trail with 51 seconds. Andy Schleck of the Leopard-Trek team after finishing 38th in the stage with 2 min and 15 second behind Zabriskie. He slipped to tenth overall from sixth place. Ruben
Bertogliati was in 29th place in the stage and was happy with the result.
Previously, David has won fourth stage Tour of Romandie and also the sixth stage of Tour of California. In 2009 he won the USPRO national time trial champion and USA cycling Professional Tour.
Radio Shack team’s Christopher Horner maintain his overall lead with the timing of 17 hours, 17 minutes and 1 second. His team-mate Levi Leipheimer was in second place with 38 seconds behind Horner.
Rory Sutherland finished third with 1 minute and 38 seconds while Christian Vande was in fourth with 1 second behind Rory.
The stage winner Zabriskie was in fifteen places overall with 4 minute and 4 seconds adrift.
Last year Tour de France at 10th top US finisher, Horner, said, "I felt my lead was safe, I just didn't want to throw the bike down in some gravel."
The next stage starts in Claremont and end in Mt. Baldy. All the riders will cover a distance of 121.9 kilometres.
