David do Carmo and Alejo Muniz qualify for Round 3 at Mr Price Pro Ballito
Brazil’s David do Carmo and his fellow countryperson Alejo Muniz successfully advanced to the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after walking away with top honours from their respective
Round 2 (Round of 48) heats that went down at Willard Beach in KwaDukuza, South Africa, on Friday, July 6.
While Do Carmo prevailed in the 11th heat, Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz finished just behind him in runner-up place to make the Round 3 cut as well. Peru’s Gabriel Villaran and Canary Island’s Jonathan Gonzalez were forced to make a premature exit
from the competition after finishing in third and fourth position respectively.
The 12th heat saw Ireland’s Glenn Hall secure a second-place finish to accompany Muniz into the next round. Brazil’s Caio Ibelli finished third, while New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand rounded out the bottom-position to find themselves eliminated
from the competition.
With some of the best surfing talent, local and international, from around the world in contention for the event title, the crowd expected to get treated to plenty of entertainment.
The 11th heat saw Do Carmo take on Zietz, Villaran and Gonzalez in a four-man battle for a place in the next round. As the heat got underway, the Brazilian surfer got off to a cautious start, but gradually grew more aggressive and eventually registered
a couple of decent scores to finish with a heat-total of 13.00 points. The score held up throughout the course of the battle to see him through to victory.
Zietz successfully extended his life in the event as well after finishing with a two-wave total of 10.30 points. Villaran and Gonzalez appeared to be struggling with their rhythm and only managed to get to a heat-total of 9.04 and 8.87 points respectively,
getting eliminated from the competition as a result.
The final heat of Round 2 saw Muniz clinch a comprehensive victory after smoothly navigating his way through the sea to get his hands on a couple of relatively juicy waves to eventually finish with a heat-total of 14.43 points.
Hall made his way into the next round as well after finishing with a heat-total of 11.87 points. Ibelli and Stairmand had to exit the race for the event title after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 9.74 and 6.67 points respectively.
