Davis Cup 2010: Argentina cruises into the Semi-final match
The 2010 Davis Cup will be the 99th edition of the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. David Nalbandian, the tennis ace from Argentina led his country into the semi final of the Davis Cup competition 2010 versus France after a straight set win over Mikhail Youzhny in the final rubber of the quarter final tie versus Russia on Sunday.
The twenty eight years old David Nalbandian, knocked down Youznhy 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 6-3 to mark his third victory over the Russian player in four face to face encounters.
The success for the South Americans concluded Russia's seventeen match winning streak in this championship on home ground, which commenced after the 1995 loss in the final at the hands of America.
"I am pretty satisfied with the way I am playing in this year’s Davis Cup championship but I am not amazed at all although I had no competitive match practice since April," Nalbandian commented after the match on Sunday.
"I am aware of the level of my normal game and I did my hard work to get ready for these clashes in the best possible manner."
Argentinean captain Tito Vazquez commented that he was contented both with his team's present form as well as the result.
"Russia was absolute favourite’s right from the beginning with their two class players Youzhny and Davydenko," he said. "But fortunately David Nalbandian performed at his top here grabbing two points for his team.
"Our pair victory was also very significant. And I feel we deserved this victory."
The very first set of the match between Youzhny and Nalbandian ended to a tie-break without any break of service game.
Nalbandian, who is ranked number one hundred and fifty three in the ATP list, held his serve in order to claim that with the pair holding their serves in the set number two, until the match’s ninth game, when the Argentinean side yielded a break for a lead of two sets.
Nalbandian begin the set number three with an instantaneous break for an easy 2-0 lead.
Youzhny, who is recently ranked number fourteen in the world, fought hard to remain in the game, but Nalbandian succeeded to continue his lead to triumph in the set and confirm his team's semi final berth versus France, 5-0 winners over defending champs Spain.
"Our list is much shorter as compared to the Argentinean side," Russian captain Shamil Tarpishchev commented.
"I have selected all our top players for the match. I am confident that none of our remaining players could have fortified our performance this weekend."
Earlier yesterday, Nikolay Davydenko who is ranked number six in the world fought back from a set down in order to beat Eduardo Schwank 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 to even the total scores at 2-2.
"I felt totally relaxed today as after being defeated in my previous games here I had simply nothing else to worry about," Davydenko said.
"Although I succeeded I am a little frustrated as far as my game is concerned this weekend. I was fighting with a greater level of confidence and courage in my last Davis Cup games. At one point I even thought of pulling out from today’s match”, he added.
"I didn’t like the way I started off today but thank God I succeeded in finding my form later in the game and triumphed to even the score."
Schwank, who is twenty four years of age, is ranked number fifty two in the world. He wrecked early in the game for an easy 3-1 lead which he held through for a one set benefit.
Davydenko broke in the game number eight of the second set in order to even the scores at one set all.
In the third set of the match, Davydenko was in total control, falling down his contender’s serve on three occasions to grab the set in a time period of twenty eight minutes.
No huge serves were seen in the set number four prior to the 10th game, when Davydenko managed another break to gain the set as well as the match.
