Davis Cup Final Analysis: Spain vs Argentina (Part-I)
The most awaited tournament of the year for the Spanish and Argentine fans is coming up in a week’s time. It’s Spain vs. Argentina in the Davis Cup final that will be hosted at Olympic Stadium in Seville, Spain from December 2-4.
Spain vs. Argentina - History in Davis Cup
Both countries have reached the finals of this tournament on three occasions and it was Spain that mustered all the victories to its name. This year Spain’s team is once again considered to be the hot favourite team to win the tournament provided superior
ranked players, familiar atmosphere and home support.
Since 1999, Spanish players have never lost any tie at home and they are the hot favourite to clinch this year’s title as well. Argentina on the other hand has won three out of five ties away from home. Therefore, they have the capability to pull up a major
upset and defeat the Spanish team on their soil for the first time in 12 years.
Spain has won Davis Cup on four occasions in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2009. They have the record of winning most Davis Cup trophies than any other nation.
Argentina on the other hand is in search of their first Davis Cup title triumph. They reached the finals of the tournament on three occasions before this but were knocked-out thrice by their competitors.
Spanish team that will feature in the Davis Cup final tie will consist of:
World No.2, Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal has been crowned champion in French Open Grand Slam, Barcelona and Monte Carlo Masters, this year. He had a fantastic year that helped him find a spot in ATP World Tour Finals, contested at O2 Arena in London. He is the strongest Spanish player
and is expected to lead his team to another Davis Cup title triumph.
World No.5, David Ferrer
David Ferrer also had a very successful year with titles in Acapulco and ASB Classic in Auckland. He is also one of the participants in the year-end finale and is all fired up to help his compatriot, Nadal, in winning the Davis Cup title this year.
World No.20, Feliciano Lopez
Feliciano Lopez had a tipsy turvy season. He maintains a decent 36-26 record but no titles to his name this year. He needs to brush up his game and pull up his heroic performances against the Argentines to help his country to another Davis Cup title.
World No.24, Fernando Verdasco
Fernando Verdasco was pretty sub-standard throughout the year that saw his ranking decline. He still has 36-24 record but needs to concentrate on his game and practice hard to bring glory to his local crowd.
