Davis Cup: Great Britain vs Turkey

Andy Murray is a top-four player in the world and has reached two grand slam finals, yet once again Britain’s No.1 will not be representing his nation in the Davis Cup.

The news isn’t exactly old but with Great Britain playing Turkey in the Europe/Africa Group II play-offs it’s hard to ignore the fact that if Murray had played in the previous round, Britain wouldn’t be in this position.

As it stands ‘Great’ Britain will be relying on Jamie Baker, James Ward, Ken Skupski and Colin Fleming to ensure Britain don’t fall further in the rankings and drop down to group three. One advantage for Britain will be the surface. Playing on grass should be a benefit to Britain but nothing should be taken for granted.

Despite the absence of Murray, Britain’s Davis Cup captain, Leon Smith, is confident his side will have more than enough to beat Turkey.

"I am confident that this is a group of players which can win this tie. They’ve all shown good form during the grass court season, and now the focus is on getting the result against Turkey,” said Smith.

It will be the first time both nations have met in the Davis Cup so it should be an intriguing encounter. Turkey will be represented by Marsel Ilhan, Ergun Zorlu, Tuna Altuna and Haluk Akkoyun and will be captained by Alaaddin Karagoz.

Let’s hope it’s Britain who are granted their wish.
