Davis Cup finalists start practicing in Seville, Spain – Tennis News
Tennis fanatics are not yet over the overwhelming triumph of evergreen Roger Federer at O2 Arena, London and they have another eye-startling event at their hands, grand finale of Davis Cup between the team of Spain and Argentina.
The matches will commence from Dec 2 but the teams are already in Seville, Spain practicing hard to make sure they are at their best when they lock horns at the Olympic courts arena. It is one of the most awaited tournaments of
the year for everyone especially the Spanish and Argentine tennis fans.
Spanish team consist of World No.2, Rafael Nadal, World No.5, David Ferrer, World No.20, Feliciano Lopez and World No.24, Fernando Verdasco. Nadal will be leading the troops and will be looking to march out of the arena with the
fifth Davis Cup title for their country.
On the other hand, Argentine team has landed in Seville and started practicing at their favourite playing surface, the clay courts. The team consist of World No.11, Juan Martin Del Potro, World No.26, Juan Monaco, World No.29,
Juan Ignacio Chela and World No.64, David Nalbandian. Del Potro is expected to marshal his troops and take revenge of 2008 defeat against Spain.
Spain won against Argentina in 2008 without Rafael Nadal at Argentina’s home soil and now it’s a major test for the Argentine team but it’s a golden opportunity for them as well to take their revenge on Spanish soil and make history.
No one from the Argentine team was able to make it to the top 8 players this year; hence no one took part in the year-end grand finale but two players from Spain, Nadal and Ferrer, participated in the tournament. David Ferrer was
the pick of performers as he managed to defeat World No.1, Novak Djokovic, and qualified for the semi-finals but lost to former World No.1, Roger Federer.
In 2008, it was World No.24, Fernando Verdasco that flabbergasted everyone and won the trophy for the Spanish team in the most dramatic manner. Del Potro didn’t take part in the practice as he is protecting his knee injury but
his compatriot, Nalbandian, took on Eduard Schwank on Monday 28th November.
After Monday’s practice session, Verdasco said “It’s clear how much David [Nalbandian] wants to win the Davis Cup and they’re going to give it everything. Together with Spain, Argentina is the other great force on clay."
It is going to be a very interesting and fiery weekend for all tennis fans.
