Davis Love III confirms Fred Couples and Mike Hulbert as assistant captains for Ryder Cup
Davis Love III, the US Ryder Cup captain, has confirmed that Fred Couples and Mike Hulbert will be assistant captains for the 2012 edition of the Ryder Cup.
Love was talking to the PGA Tour website after the practice round of the Travelers Championship on Wednesday.
According to him, he chose Couples because of his great track record in the past two Presidents Cups. In addition to that, Couples knows considerably about the US players and the team, which will help them improve their skills for the competition.
“I'd like to announce that Mike Hulbert, who's been a long-time friend of mine, and then of course Fred Couples, who's on a roll with the Presidents Cup and has gotten to know the team a lot, are going to support me and be assistant captains for the Ryder
Cup,” he said. “We're very excited that Mike and Fred agreed to do it”.
“Talked to him (Couples) a lot, gotten a lot of advice from him, been surprised at his level of detail and his commitment to the Presidents Cup. And I know that's why the guys are lobbying for him to do it over and over again,” he added.
As a team, Couples and Love won the World Cup for four consecutive years, starting from 1992. In addition to that, both of them represented the US Team in the Ryder Cup and scored 1-2 in team matches.
On the other hand, Love met Hulbert in the first PGA Tour event of his career, when he was paired with him as an amateur. Since then, they became close friends.
According to Love, Curtis Strange referred Hulbert to him, as he was the assistant coach to him at The Belfry in 2002. He told that Strange referred him as the best assistant in the Ryder Cup history.
Love added by saying that both were his natural choices. However, the next two options will be hard ones to choose.
As Couples and Hulbert do not make many appearances on the tour, the captain has decided to select the remaining two from the current players’ list on the PGA Tour.
