Davis Love III says, “Ryder Cup is not a war, it is a party”
There has been tremendous hype surrounding the build up to this year’s Ryder Cup. Players especially from the European side have been very vocal and aggressive in their press conferences.
Such aggression is coming out at the wrong time. It is may be because of the previous successes which the Europeans have enjoyed over the Americans in Ryder Cup.
However, Davis Love III has tried to calm things up. He has said that the Ryder Cup is not a war, it is a party!
Well it is a fair comment, considering words which were coming out of Ian Poulter. Ian stated that he will kill the Americans.
Rory McIlroy then went on to, somewhat, neutralise the situation and said that we would want to beat them at their home.
“There’s something about the Ryder Cup which kind of intrigues me how you can be great mates with somebody, but boy you want to kill them in the Ryder Cup,” Poulter said on Wednesday.
It may not be a war but it is certainly not a party either. Too much is at stake for the players to consider it a party.
Ryder Cup is not about money, it is about fame and glory. Every player dreams of earning glory not dollars. Therefore, they give their ultimate best in such tournaments.
This war ‘mantra’ was started off by the Americans in 1991 when they dressed up in military outfits for the Ryder Cup. Since then, both the captains have been trying to defuse the pre-Ryder Cup tensions.
“It’s not a war, it’s a party,” U.S. captain Davis Love III said. “Do we want to pummel them, of course. But it’s a golf match. We will get chippy but it will be respectful”.
Love may have tried to kill two ducks at the same time. At first, he tried to defuse the verbal tensions between the two teams and then, he was trying to calm down the nerves of his own players.
The Team USA is certainly under pressure because this was one competition they have dominated for decades. However, for last eight years or so, the Europeans have enjoyed more success.
