Davis Love III set to announce his wild cards
As time moves on, the anticipation for the Ryder Cup increases. On next Tuesday, USA Captain Davis Love III will announce his four wild card picks. The Deutsche Bank Open is the last chance for a few hopefuls to impress their captain.
Brandt Snedeker, Rickie Fowler, and Hunter Mahan will all be looking to influence the decision of Davis Love III in a positive way by making a last ditch effort at TPC Boston.
The eight automatic qualifiers were decided when the PGA Championship ended at Kiawah. The onus is now on Love to make the right choice, considering the conditions and the team.
Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk seem to be an automatic choice because they have tremendous experience in this tournament.
Rickie Fowler seems to be in the good books of Davis Love III, so he will probably make it in the team. It would be between Brandt Snedeker and Hunter Mahan to fight it out for the last remaining spot.
Brandt Snedeker has also been in good form lately, his second place finish at The Barclays and T3 finish at the Open Championship speaks well of him.
"Ryder Cup's definitely on my mind, but I'm not letting it affect the way I play," said Snedeker, "Try to win every golf tournament, try and press the gap. And if I do that, I know I will make the decision easy for them (Love and his vice-captains). I think
I'm playing the best I can".
Steve Stricker has previously been paired with Tiger Woods to a good effect, so he is certainly in the mind of Love. Nevertheless, Furyk has the experience of seven Ryder Cups.
"If you look back over the last few Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups, Tiger and Steve Stricker have been a really good pairing," Love said after the PGA Championship.
Love knows the value and skills that Furyk holds. In severe nerve wrecking situations, experience counts a great deal. “Jim Furyk is great because you can put him with anybody. He would obviously add a lot of experience and a lot of stability.”
USA will be looking to regain the Ryder Cup trophy at the Medinah Golf and Country club in Illinois.
