Davis overpowers Lisowski in the penultimate qualifier - Betfred.com World Snooker Championship 2011
Veteran, Steve Davis, triumphed over youngster, Jack Lisowski, in a thrilling penultimate qualifier of Betfred.com World Snooker Championship 2011. The legend overcame the junior 10-9, grabbing the decider frame of the clash-of-ages qualifying match.
The tossing-turning clash ignited with the 19-year-old youngster’s 0-31 lead in the first frame of the match. It did put weight of pressure on the former champion as he could only add 18 to his account before Lisowski came with a classy 41, clinching the
frame 18-73 to lead 1-0. The six-time world champion, Davis, did not let the boy hope high when he replied to the young Englishman, leading again 0-31 from the start, with a smashing 91 in the second frame to balance the encounter at 1-1.
The 2007 Junior Pot Black runner-up, Lisowski, led again 7-36 before the 53-year-old Ginger Magician pocketed 42 to grab the frame 60-50 and led 2-1. Before Davis could imagine winning the next set, when he was 27-22 ahead, the junior scrambled his thoughts
with a decent 27 and took the frame 51-61.
A couple of decent breaks, 25 and 22, from the youngster in the fifth frame brought him into a 3-2 lead. Steve Davis, the co-author of the book ‘How to be really interesting’, instantly grabbed the next frame with a beautiful break of 61 to level the match
again 3-3.
The lead did not last long as Lisowski bounced back clinching consecutive four frames smashing stunning knocks of 44, 121 and 50 in the seventh, eighth and 10th frame respectively to gain a 3-7 lead in the competition. The ninth frame took a little
longer as both players tussled with the table in order to click the frame which Lisowski won 56-62.
The legendary Steve Davis, four-time consecutive UK champion from 1984-1987, was put under a lot of stress by the 19-year-old youngster after he was four frames down to him. However, he sprang back effective from nowhere and firing a couple of outstanding
breaks including two centuries – 94, 101 and 105 – to sweep the table and move up within three frames.
Davis, five-time International Open champion (1983, 1984, 1987, 1988 and 1989), was on fire as he grabbed consecutive three frames again, after Lisowski took the 13th, 34-78, to level 8-8 in the qualifier. Lisowski was given a tough time by the
snooker legend but the young man showed, as he said, that he was not afraid of Davis instantly ditching the master to pluck the scrappy 17th frame 40-60, with two decent breaks of 25 and 28 and gained the lead 8-9.
The 53-year-old Davis, nicknamed the nugget, fired a marvellous break of 80 in the 18th frame to level the game 9-9 and force it into a decider. The World Number 22 outclassed the young Englishman in the decider frame 59-16, after a breath taking
clash with the boy, who has emerged beautifully during the season and is considered to be the future star of the game.
