Nikolay Davydenko has been the most dangerous player over three sets since last year’s US Open, winning four titles between then and the Australian Open. Despite this form, questions persisted about his ability to translate that form over the five sets required in a Grand Slam. The Russian’s defeat of Fernando Verdasco in five sets in the fourth round at Melbourne – after surrendering a two set lead – go some way to proving he’s got what it takes to go the distance, both physically and mentally.

What does the player himself think of it? “After today, you know, five set match, I win two sets. Yeah, like if I can just play in three sets matches I believe, you know, I can win. But if you see two sets won and then have chance in the fourth, but you never know. Because long match, five sets, today was good practice, four hours.”
