Davydenko stages Wimbledon comeback but Cilic out
Nikolay Davydenko may not be known for his ability to fight out five set matches, but that’s just what the Russian did against Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon today.
The seventh seed dropped the first two sets against the South African before staging a comeback to win the match 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-5, 9-7.
Meanwhile, Marin Cilic was the first big name to fall on day one at Wimbledon, with the Croatian defeated in straight sets by Germany’s Florian Mayer.
Mayer, playing his first match at the All England Club since 2007, claimed a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(1) over the 11th seed, to send him packing in the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time since Wimbledon 2007.
Cilic is joined on the sidelines on day one by fellow seeds Albert Montanes (defeated in straight sets by Paolo Lorenzi) and Ivan Ljubicic, with Poland’s Michal Przysiezny recording his maiden victory at a Grand Slam against the 17th seed on court eight today.
The 21st seed Gael Monfils, however, made a winning start to his campaign with a 6-1, 7-6(9), 6-2 victory over Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer while 22nd seed Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club, won his opener against the USA’s Jesse Levine in four sets. Mardy Fish, who defeated Andy Murray at Queen’s earlier this month, dismissed Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic in straight sets on court two.
