Day 1 results from Pool D: 16th Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship
South Korea outclassed Sri Lanka in straight sets in a Pool D game at the 16th Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship on September 15, 2011 in Chinese Taipei. The under-dogs from the Pearl Island were unable to match the prowess of their experienced counterparts, resulting in the 3-0 drubbing with scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-6 during the one-sided encounter at the National Taiwan University Sports Centre.
Korea had a great time playing against Sri Lanka as almost all the Korean players got a chance to showcase their skills on the court. 10 out of twelve players showed up on centre court. Jung Dae was the most highlighted player and she went into double digits. Dae was good in the attack and did equally well at defense. On the whole, she notched 10 points and played a big role in the South Korean victory. Her team-mate, Kim se Young, followed in her footsteps and registered eight points. Likewise, Han Song Yi and Kim Yeon Koung demonstrated their skills and scored seven points apiece.
On the Sri Lankan side, Dinesha Jayamaha was the only player who did slightly better than the rest of the team. She supported her squad with seven points, while Leena Somaratne remained second with a contribution of four points.
Koreans opened the match on strong footing and displayed an outstanding performance. The delivery of nice serves and spikes by Kim Yeon-Koung provided enough damage to the Sri Lankans to keep the momentum going. Moreover, Han Song-Yi did exceptionally well and raised Korea’s score by leaps and bounds. Sri Lanka failed to put up with the heavy strike of volleys and stayed far behind Korea. The difference of points further increased and the Korean coach replaced almost every player on the court. Sri Lanka was restricted to a extremely low score and received 9-25 loss.
The second set portrayed the same picture, where Korea totally dominated the Sri Lankans. They pulled ahead from the beginning and added consecutive points. Sri Lanka was unable to deal with the tricky bump passes of the Korean players. The second set also ended successfully for Korea as they achieved the set points, after the Sri Lankans were still at 11 points.
Korea faced no difficulty and finished the third set with a heavy margin. Sri Lankan team totally collapsed and scored only six points in the third set. Korea won the match with out putting in much effort. Three points were added to their name for making a clean sweep in the match.
South Korea is now scheduled to take on Japan on the third day of the tournament. The two teams share a longtime rivalry and it will be interesting to watch them live in action on the court.
