Day 2 of Burton Toyota Pro Junior see top seeds stamp their authority
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2-Star event Burton Toyota Pro Junior delivered a heavy dose of thrill and intense action on its second day at Surfest in Newcastle, Australia, on Friday, February 15, 2013.
If the surfing fans found the first day of the junior event to be an exciting one, they would have surely found themselves blown away by the surge in excitement and intensity as some of the top junior talent stepped into the contention for the event title
as well as the coveted ASP ranking points and a share in the $10,000 prize purse.
The four-to-five foot waves breaking at the primary event site looked very demanding, asking a little extra from the surfers before rewarding them with a decent score for their efforts.
However, the likes of Jake Sylvester and Jame McMoreland made the conditions look pretty tamed as they delivered some sensational performances.
Sylvester had managed to smoothly get into the third round (Round of 64), where he looked a little out of sorts, but still managed to make it through into the next round after finishing just behind heat winner Gabriel Farias from Brazil in second place.
Determined to do much better than what he did at Burleigh Heads earlier this month, where he got eliminated in the first heat, Sylvester is surely showing a lot more grit and passion in his latest hunt for the win.
“I’d love to be able to take out this event again,” Sylvester said. “Last time I won here, two years ago it was awesome in front of the home crowd and it really helped my rating during the year. If I could do that again it would be a massive boost to making
the top five in the juniors and going on to represent Australia at the ASP World Junior Championships.”
Australia’s Connor O’Leary was also nothing short of impressive on day 2 of the competition. Another of the many surfers who are eyeing a place in the semis or final, the New South Wales local is well aware of what he is up against, but seems more than prepared
to take the challenge on to reap the reward that waits at the end of event.
With surfers from all across the globe in contention for the win at Burton Toyota Pro Junior, there is hardly any doubt that the surfing fans will be getting a lot of entertainment.
