Day 2 of the ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro kick-off with spectacular performances
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro resumed with the third round (Round of 64) at the secondary site of Les Dunes in Bretignolles-sur-Mer, France, on Friday, April 20.
A series of impressive performances were featured throughout the day, with France’s Vincent Duvignac, his compatriot Tim Boal, Reunion Island’s Medi Veminardi and Portugal’s Justin Mujica holding off their rivals with some exquisite surfing to advance through
into the fourth round (Round of 32).
The quality of the waves had improved significantly overnight, allowing the local and international surfers to put their fantastic abilities on display and collect big scores.
The first heat of Round 3 pitted Duvignac against his compatriot Nicolas Remi, Netherland’s Yannick De Jager and French Polynesia’s Tereva David in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
Duvignac ended the draught of big scores in the event by putting on a spectacular performance during the course of the heat. His powerful curves and stylish surfing enabled him to get to a heat-total of 17.66 points and thus sealed the fate of the four-man
contest in his favour.
De Jager did not exhibit a very promising form, but still managed to make it into the next round after claiming runner-up place through his two-wave total of 9.73 points.
David and Remi were forced to make an exit from the competition field after finishing with a heat-total of 7.97 and 7.33 points respectively.
The second heat of day featured yet another exquisite performance, this time Veminardi grabbing the spotlight with sets of stylish manoeuvres. The Reunion Island-based surfer finished with a heat-total of 14.33 points, which remained unbeatable through the
course of the battle to earn him top honours and carry him through into the next round.
Basque Country’s Borja Agote successfully made the Round 4 cut as well after scoring a heat-total of 8.10 points to secure runner-up place.
Venezuela’s Rafael Pereira and Great Britain’s Toby Donachie rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 7.30 and 6.47 points, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Mujica and Spain’s Vicente Romero battled tooth-and-nail for top position during the third heat, though the Portuguese eventually managed to clinch the win, scoring a heat-total of 12.40 points against Romero’s 11.10. Both the surfers advanced into the next
round.
Spain’s Pablo Gutierrez and France’s Jules Thomet finished with their heat-totals in the nine-point range, consequently getting removed from the race for the event title.
The fourth heat of Round 3 sent Boal and his compatriot William Aliotti into the fourth round after their top-two finish in the four-man battle with a heat-total of 11.67 and 10.74 points respectively.
France’s Rudy Marechal and Great Britain’s Luis Eyre made a premature exit from the competition after failing to make much of an impact during the heat. The French surfer scored a heat-total of 8.96 points, whereas the latter finished with a two-wave total
of 8.20 points.
