Day 3 Round-up, Frys.com Open at CordeValle
There were not many low scores on Saturday, like the first few rounds. May be the players became a little apprehensive and that may have cost them some shots.
Nevertheless, it was an eventful day altogether, as the leaderboard continued to shuffle throughout the day.
The overnight leader, John Mallinger, continued his good run of form and maintained his lead. John, who is searching for his first PGA tour title of the last seven seasons, carded one-under 70 and saw his cut short from four to two shots.
"It was a little scrappy," said Mallinger, who has a two-shot lead. "I didn't have my best off the tee, but I started hitting some good shots coming in".
He continued, "I hit a lot of good putts that just didn't fall. Hopefully, I can straighten out the drive and make some putts tomorrow".
Jonas Blixt climbed up the leaderboard by shooting five-under 66. Blixt too is searching for his maiden title on the PGA tour and this might be the time for world number 115th, as he continues his magnificent run of birdies.
The Swede is just two shots behind the leader and another similar round will surely make a fitting finale at CordeValle.
Jhonattan Vegas and Nicolas Colsaerts lost some ground as they scored an even par score on Saturday. The Belgian is not only looking for his first title on the PGA Tour but, more importantly, he is vying for a permanent PGA Tour membership.
A victory at Frys.com Open would surely guarantee his tour card for the next but that looks an unlikely situation now, considering the fact that he is six shots behind the leader.
However, a decent finish will surely boost up his chances for a tour card. Nonetheless, for that, he needs to register a good score on Sunday.
The former world number one, Vijay Singh also gave himself an outside chance for the title by carding a five-under 66.
Ernie Els is only playing in his second Frys.com Open but he clearly loves playing at CordeValle. The South African is currently at T40. He carded a two-under 69 for the day.
