Day 3 of Roxy Pro France 2011 ends without any surfing action
The latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour event, Roxy Pro, failed to start on Wednesday, July 13, due to heavy rains, stormy weather and uncontestable conditions at the Cota des Basques beach in Biarritz, France.
The event organizers continued to analyse the conditions throughout the day and made several calls, none of which turned out to be any good. After hoping to see some improvement in the conditions for most part of the day, they eventually made the final call
in the afternoon, making it official that there would be no contest on Wednesday.
“We had to make several calls due to difficult weather and wave conditions and eventually send everyone home as nothing was getting better,” Roxy Pro contest director Charley Puyo said. “We have a good window between tomorrow morning and Saturday so we'll
be running as many heats as possible tomorrow and catch-up with schedule.”
Thursday, July 14th, is expected to be a promising day as far as the conditions are concerned. The organisers have also decided to move the Women’s World Title contest to another site, La Grande Plage, which is located in Biarritz as well.
So far, the current edition of Roxy Pro is done with the first three heats of Round 1. The three-woman battles took place on Tueday, July 12, featuring some of the world’s best female surfers in intense heats.
America’s Courtney Conlogue prevailed over Australian ASP Women’s World Tour rookie Tyler Wright and her compatriot Rebecca Woods to advance directly to Round 3, while the second and third place finishers headed into Round 2 to fight for a Round 3 spot.
The second heat saw the ASP Elite member from Brazil Silvana Lima walk away with top honours, while France’s Pauline Ado and Hawaii’s Alana Blanchard rounded out the second and third place respectively.
In the third heat, France’s Lee Ann Curren created a huge upset by besting current ASP Women’s World Tour No. 1 Carissa Moore, as well as Hawaii’s Melanie Bartels, to go through straight to the next round, while her rivals were forced into Round 2.
The first day saw an early end to the action due to deteriorating surfing conditions and the next day failed to turn out any better for the competition. There are still three heats left in Round 1 and the organisers will be hoping to make up for the lost
time on Thursday.
