Day 6 of Volcom Fiji Pro features two heats and plenty of massive swell at Cloudbreak
Volcom Fiji Pro resumed at the main venue of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Friday, June 8, but got called off once again soon after due to disorganised swell.
The fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour had been on hold after getting done with 22 heats, which included 12 Round 1 heats and 10 heats of Round 2, during the first two days.
The sudden deterioration in the surfing conditions put the brakes on the competition. The event organisers were compelled to keep the contest on hold for three consecutive days due to the low surfing at the open ocean reef pass.
Surfline, official forecasters for Volcom Fiji Pro, had called for a massive, long-period swell approaching the event site, most likely to arrive at Cloudbreak by Friday.
The highly-anticipated swell did arrive on Friday and it turned out to be just as huge as Surfline had predicted. In fact, the waves were so huge and powerful that the event organisers were filled with doubt if the conditions were even safe for the surfers
to compete in.
The Event Director of Volcom Fiji Pro Matt Wilson conceded that a decision to get started with the remaining heats of Round 2 was reached after assessing the conditions and working out the logistics. The swell had turned out to be disorganised in the morning,
but eventually sorted itself, brining in perfect eight-to-ten foot left-handers at Cloudbreak for the world’s best surfers to resume their battle for survival.
The fans were excited to see their favourite surfers taking on the mammoth-sized waves, but had to suffer disappointment after the event organisers had no choice but to call it a day right after the completion of the second round, which concluded with Australia’s
Bede Durbidge and Kai Otton successfully extending their life in the competition while removing their compatriot Adam Melling and Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro from the contention for the event title in the process in the 11th and 12th heat
respectively.
The live feed continued even after the competition was called off for the day and showcased the exciting surfers loosening up while enjoying a free surf session, riding barrels and putting on an exquisite show for the crowd that stayed back at the beach
even after the conclusion of Round 2.
