Day One Preview - WTA Championships Istanbul 2012

Petra Kvitova vs. Agnieszka Radwanska
Curtain raiser for the TEB-BNP Paribas WTA Championships is going to be a thrilling contest between the likes of the fourth ranked Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, and the number one Czech athlete, Petra Kvitova, in Istanbul. The 22-year-old sixth ranked Czech superstar has never lost a battle against the 23-year-old Pole.
In their three meetings to date, Radwanska has failed to win a single battle; losing in the semi-final of the Generali Ladies Linz 2009, AEGON International’s quarter-final and the round rubber match in the previous edition of this tournament.
However, one thing that might hurt the cause of Kvitova is that she is not having a good run of form whilst her opponent in enjoying some terrific play at the hard courts. So, the revenge mission is definitely on. It is expected to be a three-setter at least if both players manage to discover their firing power and rhythm.
Serena Williams vs. Angelique Kerber
Former world number one, Serena Williams, might be an invincible force at the moment, almost unbeatable with the run of form she is enjoying but something astonishing that happened in the third week of August will still haunt the 31-year-old lady. World number five, Angelique Kerber, has defeated the third ranked American in straight sets during the quarter-final at Cincinnati and that was the only time these two players faced each other in the current season.
Williams will not only look to stamp her authority earlier on in the tournament but definitely foresee a revenge mission at her hands. She is the favourite to win the contest and extend the head-to-head scores to 2-1 in her favour.
Maria Sharapova vs. Sara Errani
A rematch from the final of the French Open will be played at the first day of the WTA Championships in Istanbul. It will be the second ranked Russian superstar, Maria Sharapova, taking on the seventh ranked Italian lady, Sara Errani. Sharapova who thrashed the 25-year-old age-fellow in the final at Paris will look to repeat the same heroic performance whilst Errani will look to defy the odds and overpower the Russian. Crowd will definitely support the blonde Russian probably due to her popularity and good looks and Errani has a very big task at her hands upfront.
