Day Three Previews
Angelique Kerber (5) vs. Li Na (8)
World number five, Angelique Kerber, is already out of the race for the semi-final berth at the WTA Championships but she has the chance to drown the eighth seed Chinese, Li Na, along with her. If Li loses her second round rubber contest than she will realistically have no chance at all unless Serena Williams drills Victoria Azarenka later in the day and on Friday, Li beats the top seed superstar with a decent margin which is realistically impossible considering the form of the 23-year-old Belarusian.
Considering the head-to-head result of both players, Kerber has just won once from the Chinese superstar and despite such a marvellous season at her disposal, she just grabbed a single win in three face-offs in 2012. So, it is probably a high-time for the 24-year-old German to take revenge of the two earlier losses and equalize the current season’s head-to-head record against Li.
The Chinese superstar will be going all out against Kerber because she is eyeing a win that will keep her in touching distance from the semi-final berth at Istanbul which was her dream at the start of the tournament.
Victoria Azarenka (1) vs. Serena Williams (3)
Former world number one, Serena Williams, will look to book a spot in the last four of the WTA Championships by thrashing the in-form Belarusian superstar, Victoria Azarenka, on Thursday. She has won both her round rubber matches and plans to lock out the semi-final berth by dispatching the 23-year-old Belarusian.
Williams has defeated Azarenka on 10 different occurrences whilst lost just one match in her professional career that was way back in 2009. In four battles that were contested this season, Williams lost just one set at the US Open finale and captured the rest of the wins in straight sets. So, it is probably going to another ‘Williams Day’ with barrage of winners coming at the top ranked Azarenka.
Sara Errani (7) vs. Samantha Stosur (9)
World number nine, Samantha Stosur, entered the tournament in a lucky fashion. She replaced Petra Kvitova who lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in her first match so she has to win both her remaining round rubber matches to clasp a berth in the semi-final stage of the WTA Championships. She will lock horns with the seventh ranked Italian star, Sara Errani, in her first clash and look to bank on her five wins that came in the six head-to-head matches against Errani prior to this tournament. It will be an interesting encounter and the loser will also drop hope of qualifying for the last four players of the tournament.
